Three days after Lawrence, Brown delivers Old Testament eye for an eye revenge against five apparently pro-slavery men back west in Potawatomie.

Along with four of his sons, he first hacks three men to death with broadswords before bludgeoning two others. Brown is characteristically unapologetic:

It is better that a whole generation of men, women, and children should pass
away by a violent death than that slavery should live on.
