From Massachusetts come the “New England Emigrants” who settle in Lawrence, named after their sponsor, the philanthropist Amos Lawrence. From the nearby Slave State of Missouri come the infamous “Border Ruffians,” led by sitting President Pro-Tempore of the Senate, David Atchison.

Both sides have their eyes on the first “Pop Sov” election scheduled for November 29, 1854.
