Description

Sensitive Language and Content Disclaimer

Throughout the timeframe covered in this website, certain American populations suffered from stereotyping that systematically dehumanized them and denied them the rights to life, liberty and happiness guaranteed in the Constitution. While these groups included Native Americans and immigrants from Ireland, Europe and Asia, none were treated as shamefully as the enslaved Africans.

In telling these tragic stories, we have tried to use “language” that respects the dignity and humanity of each group, while also retaining, especially in “quotes,” the often insensitive speech of the era. The “flow and readability” of the text was also a consideration in arriving at the final text. The author hopes that these editorial principles will be understandable and acceptable to readers, and apologizes in advance for any oversights.
