With Buchanan’s blessing, 131 delegates appear at the Willard Hotel seeking a last second compromise. Included here are 50 congressmen, 14 senators, 19 governors, 12 Supreme Court justices and 6 cabinet members in addition to Tyler. Pundits quickly label it “The Old Gentlemen’s Convention.”

After two weeks of give and take it ends with no progress.
