Chapter 34: Other Opponents of Slavery Are Also Gaining Momentum

Gerrit Smith 2
Gerrit Smith

Along with the Free Soil Party comes growing Northern resistance to what’s soon called the Southern “Slavocracy.” Which also includes Yankee aversion to a culture that seems aristocratic, lazy, arrogant and falsely powerful in DC politics.

The resistance takes several forms.

A second abolitionist group centered in New York under philanthropist Gerrit Smith forms the Liberty Party on the belief that freedom will lie in political action not merely roving lecturers.

A dramatic North-South church schism occurs when the Baptist and Methodist hierarchies decide that clergy should no longer be allowed to own slaves.

An organized Underground Railroad network transports Southern escapees across the Canadian border to safety.

And the American Anti-Slavery Society reaches some 2,000 chapters and over 150,000 members.
