Section #1 - Three Days At Gettysburg
Chapter 8: The Order Goes Out to Avoid Any Major Battles
Still not knowing the whereabouts of the Union troops, a cautious Lee sends Longstreet’s and Hill’s Corps toward Cashtown, 9 miles northwest of Gettysburg, while dispatching Ewell’s men further north to Carlisle, Pa., 28 miles away.
If the need arises to reunite his strung out forces in a hurry, Lee reckons that the roads into Gettysburg will serve the purpose.
But until he can learn more from Stuart, he orders his commanders to avoid any major engagements.
