Chapter 32: Day Three: 3:00 AM

Lee again awakens at 3:00 AM, now convinced that with “proper concert of action” he can still prevail. His plan calls for an assault on the left by Ewell on Culp’s Hill together with a coordinated thrust by Longstreet and Hill, this time at the Union center not the far right.

But just as Lee rides out to prepare, he hears cannon fire from the Union on Culp’s hill. This puts an end to his hope for the simultaneous attack, although he fails to notify Ewell of the fact.
