Section #1 - Three Days At Gettysburg
Chapter 25: Day 2 – 7:00 to Noon
But when Longstreet joins him in the morning he remains reluctant to carry out an immediate attack, adding that he is “without one boot” since General Pickett’s Division is still not present. A heated argument follows with Lee proposing troop locations and Longstreet regarding that as an infringement on his authority.
About 11:00 AM, Lee digs in, ordering Longstreet to attack diagonally up the Emmetsburg Pike, across the Rose Woods and the Peach Orchard toward the Union right flank on Cemetery Ridge. Because the assault is to be made en echelon, Longstreet must first move all of his troops to the far right, and achieve this without being spotted by Union look-outs on the Ridge to ensure surprise.
