Section #1 - Three Days At Gettysburg
Chapter 22: Day One: 6:00–9:30 PM
6:00 PM brings General John Geary’s Third Division of the XII Corps up, followed by General John Slocum’s XII Corps. This still makes only 9 of the Union’s total of 19 Divisions now present. To correct this, Hancock places Slocum in charge of the defense and heads back to update Meade and hasten more reinforcements, including George Sykes V Corps.
Meanwhile Lee waits impatiently for over two hours expecting the assault on Culp’s Hill. But when he finds Ewell around 6:46PM he hears that the arrival of General Edward Johnson’s Division was delayed, and therefore the attack was called off. This despite reports that Jubal Early and other tried to talk the hesitant Ewell into proceeding.
Thus the Day One fighting ends with a whimper.
