Chapter 18: The Know-Nothing Party

Amidst the conflicts over slavery, a new faction gains temporary momentum. It is called the American Party and is dedicated to opposing the sharp upswing in Catholic immigrants from Ireland and Germany immigration around 1848. It operates in secret cells where members respond to inquiries about its activities by saying we “Know Nothing.” It flames out after 1856 as slavery issues intensify.
