Chapter 12: Martin Van Buren

“Old Hickory” is followed by his Vice-President, Martin Van Buren, son of a tavern owner whose first language growing up in New York is Dutch. “Little Matty” is an astute political operative and master of patronage, but is hamstrung throughout his term by fall-out from the Bank Panic of 1837 brought on by Jackson’s Specie Circular.
