Chapter 28: The Confederate States of America

On December 20, 1860, 45 days after Lincoln’s victory, South Carolina becomes the first state to secede from the Union. Even before the new President is sworn in, seven Slave States join in form the new Confederacy: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas.
