Chapter 26: The Constitutional Unionist Party

The Democrats’ schism alarms many of Washington’s senior politicians, and together they form a fourth party dedicated entirely to upholding the letter of the Constitution. Leaders here include John J. Crittenden of Kentucky, Massachusetts’ Edward Everett, Sam Houston of Texas and the recently retired Senator from Tennessee, John Bell, who will head the ticket.
