Section #1 - Lincoln’s Long Journey Home to Racial Equality
Chapter 7: Lincoln Attacks the Mexican War
He arrives in DC at a time when President James Polk and his fellow Southerners are intent on finding new land to expand slavery.
Their search focuses on Mexico where, for two decades, American settlers establish the Republic of Texas, including the practice of slavery which has been officially banned since 1829.
When the Mexicans attempt to drive the Americans out in 1845, Polk annexes Texas and in 1846 sends troops under General Zachary Taylor across the Rio Grande. This move is met by General Lopez de Santa Anna and initiates the Mexican War.
Lincoln joins the Whigs opposition to the war as an immoral land grab. His “spot speech” questions the assertion that the conflict was initiated by Mexico and draws accusations that he is a traitor.
