Section #1 - Lincoln’s Long Journey Home to Racial Equality
Chapter 6: Abe Wins a Single Term in the U.S. House
By 1843, he is a member of Clay’s new Whig Party with political ambitions to serve at the national level. He runs that year for election to the U.S. House against John Hardin, another Kentucky native who served with him in the Blackhawk War.
Despite losing out to Hardin, the race sets him up to run again in 1846 and he becomes the only Whig in the Illinois delegation to the 30th Congress.
