Taken during the Spanish-American War of 1898. Third from the left is Major General Joseph Wheeler, Confederate veteran of the Civil War, who commands the U.S. Cavalry during the fighting in Cuba. On the far right is Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt who wins fame on July 1, 1898 for leading his Rough Riders up San Juan hill in the pivotal American victory. Two years later, Roosevelt rides this tide into becoming America’s 26th President.
