Born in 1843, Emma Webb became a prominent American actress who debuted in New Orleans and, at age 16, appeared at the Old Bowery Theater in New York. She then managed the Webb Sisters’ Theater in NYC along with her sibling Ada. Around 1866 she became a public lecturer, defending southern secession, supporting slavery in debates with abolitionist Anna Dickinson, and criticizing Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address for diminishing Washington’s role in ensuring a free society.
