Born in 1809, Thompson attends Princeton Theological Seminary and serves as a Presbyterian missionary pastor in St. Clair, Michigan. He is a fervent abolitionist, and his home is a frequently used “station” on the Underground Railway. After welcoming run-aways he rows them across the St. Clair River to freedom in Ontario. He raises a contingent of Free State settlers during the Bloody Kansas turmoil and then joins the U.S. Christian Commission, caring for wounded soldiers in DC hospitals. He dies in 1890.
