At thirty-one, Sebastian is named to the Arkansas Supreme Court and five years later is named U.S. Senator upon the death of his predecessor. He appears to oppose succession and refuses to resign when the Civil War breaks out. But he is expelled anyway on a trumped up charge of supporting the Confederacy, and returns to practicing law. His family protests the expulsion after the war and it is rescinded in 1887.
