In 1853, James Tichborne becomes the 10th Baronet in a UK noble house dating to the 16th century. A year later, this photo of his son, Roger, is taken in Rio De Janeiro just before he is apparently lost at sea aboard the Bella on his way to Jamaica. But his mother believes he was rescued and taken to Australia, and she sends detectives there to find him. After a man steps forward in 1865 claiming to be Roger (the 11th Baronet), all of London is caught up in a series of trials challenging his identity. In the end, the court declares him to be a fake named Arthur Orton and he is imprisoned for ten years before dying destitute in 1898.
