Congressman John Hickman

Hickman serves as a Democrat Congressman from Pennsylvania from 1855 to 1863. He opposed the admission of Kansas as a Slave State under the Pro-Slavery Lecompton Constitution. By 1860 he is a Republican and comes in third at as a candidate for the Vice-President slot behind Hannibal Hamlin. Once the South secedes, he is a forceful proponent of declaring war. His anti-slavery friendships include Pennsylvania’s Thad Stevens.
