In the spring of 1864 General Alfred Sully hires 51 Yankton Indians to serve as scouts for nine months at a pay of $300. Instead they are forced to accept $75 at a meeting in 1871. This photograph shows the Yankton on a visit to Fort Sully in 1865 presumably in search of the money they were promised.
