Among his many claims to fame, Holmes is both a leading American poet and an MD who teaches at Dartmouth College and pioneers medical advances. His popular poems such as “Old ironsides” (“Ay tear her tattered ensign down…the eagle of the sea”) and the “Autocrat of the Kitchen Table” series casts him as leader of the “fireside poets” in Boston. He is also remembered as father of O.W. Holmes, Jr, wounded three times during the Civil War before serving as a Supreme Court Justice from 1902 to 1932.
