Mt Holyoke Summit House

The Summit House begins as a simple guest cabin in 1821, sixteen years before Mary Lyon opens her historic Mt. Holyoke Female Seminary.  In 1851 John and Francis French build a two-story 8 room hotel to serve additional tourists. In 1867 track is laid for a graduated 600 foot tram comprising two trolley cars and rising 365 feet from the base of the mountain, but it is not operational until 1897.
