Born in 1833 to a Quaker family, Elizabeth and her brother John Greenleaf Whittier both become poets, known for their lyrical observations of everyday people, the natural world, and the solace they find in religious faith. Among her many social reform causes, she helps found the Women’s Anti-Slavery Society in Amesbury, Massachusetts, and assists run-away slaves. In the election of 1856 she and her brother write campaign songs for Republican, John C. Fremont. In 1864 her health is failing and she dies after suffering a fall at the Isles of Shoals.
