The Dovecote in the photo lies in the courtyard of Hougoumont Chateau, successfully defended by the British against repeated French assaults on Waterloo Day. The brick structure is intended to provide shelter for domestic doves (or pigeons) so they can breed and supply eggs and meat for the household. It faces toward the elaborate garden, with the famous North Gate on its right. Its original peaked roof is destroyed during the battle.
