This election ballot is from the 1872 race for Governor in New Hampshire won by Ezekial Straw. He graduates from Phillips Andover Academy and becomes a civil engineer for the Nashua & Lowell Railway. He then oversees development of the city of Amoskeag, at that time site of the largest textile mill in the world. He engineers the canal there and travels to England to learn how to manufacture muslin cloth. In 1859, age 40, he enters the state legislature as a Republican and then runs successfully for governor, serving from 1872-74. He also helps develop the city of Manchester, founding a Unitarian Church and a public library there.
