After being cited for gallantry at the Battle of Antietam, the 26 year old Hall is Colonel of the 4th U.S. Artillery during the Battle of Gettysburg. On July 3 he is situated in the Union center at the Copse of Trees when it is threatened by Confederates in the Pickett-Pettigrew charge. As troops from Rans Wright’s brigade are about to break through, Hall races in to drive them back, losing some 200 men in the process. While he is again recognized for heroism, it is his last battle. His health is shot and he musters out in May 1864 before a premature death at age 30 in 1867.
