First a Democrat, then a “free soil” Whig as Governor of Pa. from 1848-52. He joins the anti-slavery faction of the Know Nothing Party in 1856. He refuses to support Lincoln’s reelection campaign in 1864, instead backing John C. Fremont’s run on the Radical Democracy ticket which favors more harsh treatment of the South during reconstruction.
