Confederate Dead at Gettysburg

Taken by Alexander Gardner on July 5, 1863 this photo shows Confederates killed on July 2 after their assault in the Sherfy Peach Orchard. They are likely members of the 2nd or 3rd Battalions of Kershaw’s 15th South Carolina Regiment, who attack the Union’s 18th and 22nd  Massachusetts Regiments under Colonel William Tilton.  The fallen bodies are bloated, having lain in the July son for three days. In the extreme upper left a rear wheel on Gardner’s darkroom wagon can be seen.
